Precision Flap Mould Construction

A flap mould is a metal tool used to manufacture flaps. It is installed on a vulcanization press or injection molding machine, where heat and pressure shape rubber material into a ring-shaped flap.

Core Structure of a Flap Mould

A traditional compression mould for flaps typically consists of three parts:

  • Top plate: Usually rectangular or ring-shaped, with a recess matching the flap profile on its lower side.
  • Middle plate (core ring): A critical component; it is a ring that determines the inner shape and diameter of the flap.
  • Bottom plate: Corresponds to the top plate, with a ring-shaped groove on its upper side to hold the rubber compound.

Production process: The rubber compound is placed into the bottom plate. When the mould is closed and heated under pressure, the rubber flows and fills the cavity, then cures into a ring-shaped flap.

Technical Advantages of Modern Flap Moulds

Technical Advantages of Flap Mould
  • Dual-compound flap production: By improving the mould structure, the top and bottom plates can press simultaneously, allowing two different rubber compounds to flow in a controlled manner. This produces a dual-layer or dual-density flap — for example, a wear-resistant bottom layer combined with a softer top layer that is gentler on the inner tube.
  • Easy demolding: Some modern moulds feature a threaded ejection mechanism at the bottom. After curing, simply turning the ejector screw pushes the flap smoothly out of the mould, eliminating the need for prying. This saves labor and protects both the product and the mould.
  • Injection molding process: Compared to traditional compression molding, injection moulds offer more precise control over temperature (e.g., 170–190°C), injection speed, and pressure. This results in more stable dimensions, uniform density, and higher automation — ideal for mass production.

A flap mould is a specialized tool for producing the protective rubber ring (flap) that goes between an inner tube and the rim. The mould cavity gives the rubber its specific shape (thicker in the middle, thinner at the edges, with a valve hole), while the vulcanization or injection process gives the product its required physical properties.
